Our calculations, not official figures
Rankings, difference columns, the 0–100 safety score, the estimated grocery prices, the effective property tax rate and every other figure marked Costely calculation are ours. No statistical office publishes them, endorses them or has reviewed them. Where a figure is reproduced exactly as an office published it, the table says so in the row.
The publishers do not endorse this site
Data reaches us from the World Bank, Eurostat, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, the Energy Information Administration, the FBI, NASA, UNODC and Statistics Canada. None of them is affiliated with Costely, and nothing here implies their approval. Two of them ask for wording we repeat verbatim: this product uses the Census Bureau Data API but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau, and BLS.gov cannot vouch for data or analyses derived from these data after the data have been retrieved from BLS.gov.
Not advice
Costely is a reference tool, not a professional service. Nothing on it is financial, tax, legal, immigration, employment, medical or safety advice, and nothing on it is a recommendation to move, to take a job, to buy or rent a property, or to make any investment. Tax figures in particular are model calculations for a stated household profile and do not describe your liability; only a qualified adviser or the relevant tax authority can do that.
The safety score is a statistic, not a security assessment
The 0–100 score is our own transformation of a homicide rate published for a whole country or a whole state, often for a year that has already passed. It says nothing about a street, a district, a building, a time of day or a particular person’s circumstances, and it counts one crime only. It is not a travel advisory, not a security assessment, not a threat analysis and not a personal risk rating.
Do not use this site to decide whether a place is safe to visit, to live in, to work in or to send anyone to. For that, use the travel advice of your own government, local law enforcement and a qualified security professional. The same applies to every other figure here: none of it is guidance on health, medical care, emergency services, road safety, natural hazards, building safety, working conditions or crime prevention, and none of it should be relied on where physical safety is at stake. To the fullest extent permitted by law we accept no responsibility for any decision about personal safety taken on the basis of anything published here.
Averages are not your life
Every measure here is an average or a median across a country, a state or a whole economy. Your rent, your salary, your grocery bill and your tax bill depend on your city, your household, your contract and your circumstances, and can differ from these figures by a wide margin. A national figure says nothing about any particular address.
Timing
Series carry different reference periods, some of them years apart, and every one of them is published with a lag. Prices, wages and tax rules can change between the reference period and the day you read the page. Each table names its period and the date we retrieved it; treat both as part of the figure.
No warranty
The site and its data are provided as is and as available, without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any figure is complete, current or correct.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Costely and the people behind it are not liable for any loss or damage — including lost income, wasted expenditure, or any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss — arising from use of this site or reliance on any figure published here, including any loss said to follow from a decision about where to live, work, travel or invest. Nothing in this notice excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom or a similar jurisdiction, your mandatory statutory rights are unaffected by this notice.
Links to other sites
We link to statistical offices and their documentation so that any figure can be traced. We do not control those sites, are not responsible for their content, and their appearance here is not an endorsement.
Check the source before it matters
Every block names its dataset, its reference period and the retrieval date, and the sources register on each comparison page carries the full attribution. Before a decision that costs money, verify the number with the original publisher.
